In celebration of its 16th birthday, Zomato hosted a unique event—a roast where staff and executives faced a barrage of jokes from comedians. The lively session saw the participation of Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal and Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa, alongside numerous employees.
The spotlight of the roast was on comedian Swati Sachdeva, who humorously critiqued Zomato's rising extraneous charges, including the recent hike in its platform fee from Rs 5 to Rs 6 and the reduction of the free delivery radius from 10 km to 7 km, which has irked many customers.
Sachdeva kicked off her performance by expressing gratitude to CEO Deepinder Goyal for the opportunity, quipping, “Now I just hope you don’t charge a platform fee for this as well.” The room burst into laughter at her remark.
She continued to poke fun at Zomato's rainy weather surge charges, noting the inconsistency of these fees even on clear days. “Your product managers run to the terrace to check if there are clouds and apply rain surge,” she jested, to the amusement of the audience.
Turning her attention to Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa, Sachdeva questioned the logic behind the handling charge for grocery orders. “If a person is delivering groceries, they will naturally have to handle them,” she pointed out, eliciting sheepish laughter from the crowd. Deepinder Goyal, however, was seen laughing heartily at the jest.
The event also featured seasoned comedians like Gaurav Kapoor and Samay Raina, who joined in the fun, making the roast a memorable part of Zomato’s birthday celebrations.
In addition to the roast, Zomato marked its 16th anniversary with a full-page ad in a leading newspaper. Styled like a political pamphlet, the ad received widespread praise for its creativity.
