A 35-year-old farmer was arrested for allegedly beating his father to death following a long-running dispute over marriage at their home in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district, the police said.

The incident took place late on Wednesday night in Hosadurga, where the accused, identified as S Ningaraja, is alleged to have assaulted his father, T Sannaningappa, while the latter was asleep, the Times of India reported. Ningaraja was taken into custody after a complaint was lodged by his elder brother, S Maruti.

According to the complaint, Ningaraja was angry with his father for not arranging his marriage, despite being 35 years old. He reportedly resented the fact that his father had married twice, while he remained unmarried, even as many men of his age in the village were already married and had children.

Maruti, who works at a private firm in Hosadurga town, told police that his father often scolded Ningaraja for what he described as a “lazy attitude” and for not working seriously in the fields. The recurring confrontations seemingly deepened tensions within the family.

On Wednesday evening, the accused allegedly argued with his father during dinner over the same issue and threatened to kill him. Later that night, Ningaraja is said to have struck Sannaningappa on the head with an iron rod.

Around midnight, Maruti received a phone call from a relative alerting him to the assault. The injured man was rushed to a nearby government hospital in Hosadurga, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Police said a case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events and recover evidence.

In a similar recent incident, a man in Uttar Pradesh allegedly killed his father, sister, and niece with an axe over a land dispute and dumped their bodies into a well. According to the police, the man revealed that he had been embroiled in a land dispute with his father, Ram Singh (55), ever since the latter had transferred four bighas of land to his brother. The accused said he had demanded 10 biswa (unit) of land from his father, and was furious when his father refused.
