An American entrepreneur recently took to Reddit to share his thoughts about leaving the United States and starting a new life in Delhi, prompting a wide discussion online about culture, lifestyle, and the city’s air quality.

In the post, the man claimed he is a white American in his mid-30s who retired early after working in the television industry. He said a period of financial success allowed him to step away from work, but he later grew dissatisfied with life in the US. Looking for a change, he began exploring the idea of relocating abroad and questioned whether India, particularly Delhi, could be a good move.

He said Indian culture was already part of his personal and professional life. “I love Indian food, Indian women, and I own a company with many Indian employees right now,” the post adds.

Based on this familiarity, the Reddit user asked whether settling in Delhi as a foreigner was a realistic plan. He also questioned whether he would be accepted by local society. He wrote, “Is it realistic to think I can move to Delhi and live a good life? Or will the culture reject me?”

The post quickly gained attention and drew a large number of responses. Reddit users reacted with a mix of encouragement and caution. While some welcomed his interest in India, many warned him about Delhi’s air quality, which remains a major concern.

One of the users commented, “You'll not remain white in this Delhi's AQI.” Another said, “bro pls consider Delhi's air pollution level before coming here.” A third user commented, “If you wanna enjoy culture, choose another city. In Delhi, you will get hazardous air quality, thugs on the street, and overall bad vibes.”

Several users advised him to research other Indian cities before making a decision, pointing out that pollution remains a key issue in the capital.

One user wrote, “Look for better cities, honestly do little research, Delhi is a good place, but really bad AQI makes it bad, especially if you are not used to such high pollution. If you are keen, then go to Delhi as a tourist from another city rather than actually living there.” Another comment said, “If you wish to reduce your lifespan, sure. But at least the food is great.”

Some users addressed concerns about cultural acceptance. One commenter explained, “People already raised the AQI issue. So yeah, that is a problem. But culturally, you will definitely have acceptance. White people are put on a pedestal. You might encounter some snarky comments here and there, but mostly you will find people more than welcoming.”

One user commented, “Live temporarily for a year, then decide. One year shows you all seasons - and the worst of it.”

Another suggested exploring different regions of the country before choosing where to settle. The comment read, “Just explore all parts of India, live in Delhi, visit Goa, have peaceful tea in Kerala, enjoy rain in the North East, have lush greenery in the mountains of Himachal and then decide where you want to stay. Amazing food is everywhere.”
