As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered the Union Budget, attention on social media drifted briefly from fiscal policy to fashion, with her choice of saree sparking a flurry of predictions and commentary online. In the days leading up to the presentation, several users, including politicians, speculated on what the finance minister would wear on Budget Day.
Among them was UBT–Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who, while speaking to reporters, made a pointed remark yesterday. She said she hoped the finance minister would present a national budget rather than one tailored to poll-bound states, joking that it might come with a Tamil Nadu handloom saree, a few lines in Bengali, and policy announcements for Assam’s tea gardens.

When Sitharaman appeared in a Kanjeevaram saree during the Budget presentation, Chaturvedi responded wryly, noting that the “Tamil Nadu handloom weave” prediction had indeed come true. The comment quickly gained traction online, adding fuel to discussions around symbolism and electoral optics.
Social media users were divided on whether the saree choice had political undertones, with some linking it to the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Others dismissed the speculation, pointing out that elections occur almost every year in different states, while several noted that Sitharaman, being from Tamil Nadu, has frequently worn Kanjeevaram sarees on Budget Day.
The debate echoed a similar moment from last year. In 2025, Sitharaman wore a Madhubani hand-painted ivory saree with a golden border, a tribute to Mithila art and Padma Shri awardee Dulari Devi. That year, too, Bihar was heading into Assembly elections, prompting comparable interpretations.
This year’s saree featured a deep purple Kanjeevaram silk woven in the classic Kattam pattern, marked by fine golden-brown intersecting lines that gave the fabric a composed, rhythmic structure. A restrained coffee-brown border highlighted traditional craftsmanship without heavy ornamentation.
