Sundar Pichai gets nostalgic as Google Gemini launches free JEE Main mock test: 'If I could...'

Google’s CEO shared his excitement as the company’s AI platform Gemini rolls out free full-length JEE Main mock tests, following last week’s SAT practice exams. Pichai, a graduate of IIT Kharagpur, got nostalgic and said he wished tools like this were available when he was a student.

Google’s Gemini has now introduced free full-length mock tests for JEE Main, following earlier launch of practice SAT exams. The update was shared by the official Google Gemini account on X, along with a short video demonstrating how students can attempt these tests directly on the platform.

The post read, “Building on last week’s announcement of practice SATs in Gemini, you can now also take full length mock JEE Main tests in Gemini at no cost.”

The addition of free mock tests marks another step in Google’s push to use artificial intelligence to support students preparing for global exams. The SAT practice tests, launched last week, include full-length questions and instant performance feedback. Students can review correct answers and request explanations from Gemini, providing a more interactive learning experience.

The new JEE Main mock tests follow the same approach. They are designed to mirror the format of the actual exam, with timed sections and question types similar to those students will encounter in the official test. Once a test is completed, Gemini provides a performance report highlighting areas of strength and areas that need improvement.

When the update was announced, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, reacted with a nostalgic comment. He wrote, “If I could turn back time.... excited for SATs last week and JEE Main this week in Gemini at no cost.”

Pichai, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur where he studied Metallurgical Engineering, joined Google in 2004 and became CEO in 2015. His remark resonated with students and alumni alike because of his background in engineering and competitive exams.

Social media reactions were largely positive. Students and professionals praised Google for making quality exam preparation tools accessible. One user wrote, “This is a game changer for students who cannot afford expensive coaching.” Another commented, “Free full length mocks inside Gemini sounds unreal. Technology is finally levelling the field.”

Aspiring JEE candidates expressed excitement about the impact of these resources. “As a JEE aspirant, this feels like a blessing,” wrote one user. Another added, “Getting good mock papers for JEE was really hard when I was preparing. Super cool to see this!”

Others reflected nostalgically, “Wish something like this existed when we were preparing for exams.” Another added, “If I could have had the chance to practice with such tool, then I would have gotten into IIT.”

Josh Woodward, Vice President for Google Labs, Gemini and AI Studio, also commented on the announcement. He emphasised the company’s focus on student needs in India, “Good morning India! A lot of you asked for full length mock JEE Main tests in @GeminiApp at no cost, done! Good luck on your prep! Last week, SAT. This week, JEE. What other global exams would be most helpful?”
