Indian-origin American billionaire entrepreneur and Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy and his wife Apoorva Tewari have welcomed their third child, a baby girl, and announced that they have named her Savithri, a deeply traditional Indian name. The announcement has sparked a wide-ranging conversation online, with many praising the couple for embracing their cultural roots while living in the United States.
Sharing the news, Ramaswamy said that both mother and child are healthy and doing well, adding that the family is grateful for the prayers and warm wishes they have received from friends, supporters, and well-wishers across Ohio and the country.

What truly caught the internet’s attention, however, was the choice of the name Savithri. Social media users applauded the decision, calling it a refreshing affirmation of Indian heritage. One user expressed gratitude to the couple for choosing a name that reflects tradition, while another remarked that names like Savithri have become increasingly rare among Indians since the 1990s.
In Hindu tradition, Goddess Savithri is revered as a symbol of truth, unwavering devotion, courage, wisdom, and moral strength. Several users invoked these qualities while congratulating the family, wishing that the newborn grows up embodying the virtues associated with the name. Others admired the larger picture, describing the family as an ideal blend of faith, fitness, success, and stability.
At the same time, the decision also drew criticism from a section of the internet. Some questioned why an American public figure would give his child a traditional Indian name, arguing that children born in the US should be named in a way that reflects “American culture” first. A few critics went further, linking naming practices to religion, assimilation, and immigration, and suggesting that non-English names symbolise a lack of cultural integration. “When you live in America you should take pride in naming your kids in a fashion that ties them to American culture first,” a user wrote.
