An online exchange between an Indian woman and the owner of a small restaurant in Mexico attracted widespread attention after screenshots of a Google review and the proprietor’s response circulated on social media.
The incident came to light after a post shared by X user @whizwang featured images of the original review along with the restaurant owner’s reply. The post later gained significant traction on the platform.
The review was written by Anvita Kotha, identified as a local guide. In her feedback, she said she had ordered dan dan noodles and dumplings served in chilli oil. She stated that the food did not meet her expectations for heat, adding that it was “not spicy” despite requesting additional chilli oiland seasoning it with salt.
Kotha also included positive remarks in her review. She described the matcha latte as “pretty great” and mentioned that the establishment, which she characterised as small, offered outdoor seating.
The response from the restaurant owner, Wang Tulum, was posted publicly and ran at length. In his reply, Wang said the restaurant did not tailor its food to individual preferences and that the dishes reflected the owners’ own tastes.
“We don’t wake up and think of catering our dishes to these self-entitled people,” he wrote, adding that customers who wished to control flavour profiles should consider starting their own establishments. “Open your own restaurant and see what your food tastes like,” he said.
this is the most unhinged response to a google review from a business i have ever seena story in two parts pic.twitter.com/bLkgWXnB8v — whizwang (@whizwang) January 5, 2026
Wang further stated that the purpose of the restaurant was to serve food that the owners themselves valued, rather than modifying recipes in reaction to each review. "So, we will not be listening to you because we don't cater to your taste," he wrote while concluding.
The exchange prompted varied responses from social media users once the screenshots were shared.
Not only Kotha but other customers who reviewed the restaurant and wrote anything bad were met with angry replies from the owner.
Some commenters supported the restaurant owner, arguing that chefs and small business owners should have the freedom to define their cuisine without being pressured to alter it for every customer. Others criticised the tone of the reply and said the language used towards a reviewer was unnecessary.
One user commented, “Wow, that's actually insane lol.” Another wrote, “This restaurant owner is crashing out for no reason.”
A third comment read, “Kind of want to leave a review just to see what reply I’d get.” Another user added, “This restaurant owner seems awesome and the food is probably outstanding.”
