  • Incident led to stricter safeguards at the sneaker start-up

A Delhi-based sneaker start-up has reportedly lost Rs lakh after an employee misused 100% discount coupons. In a post on X, Arjun Singh, co-founder of the Delhi-based sneaker label Gully Labs, alleged that an employee defrauded the firm by creating codes for personal purchases.

According to Singh, the employee joined and, within a week, created several 100% discount coupons to order sneakers for his friends and family before quitting.

“We hired a CS person a couple of months ago. Within the first week of joining, he made INR 2L of 100% discount orders - sent to his friends and quit in a week,” Singh said.

After being caught, the employee promised to return the sneakers. However, the Gully Labs team managed to retrieve only half before the ex-employee reportedly sent legal threats accusing the company of harassment.

“When caught - initially he decided to cooperate and returned half the shoes but the other half were used etc,” Singh said.

He added, “Then he started sending legal notices that we were harassing him in response to our notice to return the products or reimburse us!”

According to the co-founder, the incident led the company to introduce strong safeguards.

In response to a post by Akshay Jain, Singh said that business growth brings challenges, with Jain noting that his company had to protect sensitive customer and order data.

“As brands grow, they have newer set of challenges. Never thought I have to guard customer details, order exports from people in the same organisation due to security concerns. Increases complexity, but no choice,” he wrote on X.

The posts have ignited fresh debate around workplace ethics and customer service standards.

One user said, “Dude! That’s a horrid story. Good thing it was caught. At times, I wish things like these were shared with the person’s profile.”

Another X user wrote, “Name and shame so he never gets a job and his entire life is destroyed.”

A third user added, “I hate to say this, but this is Indian mentality, which makes people get greedy and start exploiting something till it is ruined for others.”
