Microsoft to end support for Windows 7

Microsoft is also recommending you buy a new machine rather than upgrading to Windows 10 on your old computer.

Microsoft has confirmed that it will end support for Windows 7 on the 14th of January 2020. The tech-giant has fulfilled its initial promise of providing ten years of updates for one of its bests operating systems. Few Windows 7 users have already started receiving these notifications.

According to some Windows 7 users, a pop-up notification appears when they boot up their Windows 7 PC. The notification reads: “After 10 years, support for Windows 7 is nearing an end.” Reddit users claim they have started receiving these notifications from April 18, 2019.

Windows 7 users will still be able to use their machines without upgrading to Windows 10 after the January 14, 2020. But, they won’t receive any software updates or technical assistance from Microsoft. The support page confirms that Windows 7 users will be prone to malware and viruses without software and security updates.

The Microsoft Windows 7 page explained: “While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, without continued software and security updates, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10. And the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC. While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older device, it is not recommended.”

Yes, Microsoft is also recommending you to buy a new machine rather than upgrading to Windows 10 on your old computer.

It is worth noting that the current notifications are only meant for Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Ultimate users. Windows 7 Enterprise users can continue using the operating system until 2023 but will have to pay for Extended Security Updates (ESU).
