Language has long been a sensitive subject in Bengaluru, and a new viral video has once again brought the debate to the forefront. A social experiment conducted on the streets of the city has triggered strong reactions online after several participants were seen supporting the idea of making Hindi mandatory in the Karnataka capital.

In the Instagram vox-pop, a content creator approached passersby and posed a provocative question, “Should Hindi be made compulsory in Bengaluru?” Framing it as a petition-driven “social experiment,” he even asked participants to sign in support of the proposal, testing how people would respond to the idea of institutionalising Hindi in a city rooted in Kannada heritage.

Some respondents backed the proposal. One young woman argued that since a large number of North Indians live in Bengaluru, making Hindi mandatory would make life easier for many residents. Another participant suggested a middle path, saying Hindi could be made compulsory alongside Kannada, adding that she personally felt more comfortable communicating in Hindi.

However, the experiment also captured firm opposition. A man countered the proposal, stating that Bengaluru is fundamentally “Kannada land” and that its linguistic and cultural identity cannot be sidelined. His response reflected a sentiment often voiced in the city’s recurring language debates, that migration and growth should not come at the cost of local heritage.

Video receives massive backlash 

After the clip went viral, social media users weighed in sharply. Many criticised what they described as a lack of awareness about the city’s history and cultural roots. One user wrote that Bengaluru’s growth has been shaped by Kannada identity, global talent, and a cosmopolitan ethos, not linguistic imposition. Migration, they said, is welcome, but respect for the local language is non-negotiable.

Another commenter called the balanced perspective a “sensible take,” adding that while residents must honour Kannada, language activism too should remain measured and rational. Yet another user expressed disappointment at what they saw as cultural insensitivity, arguing that expecting a city to adapt entirely to one’s own language reflects a disregard for local traditions.
