Bright red caps parodying Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” or MAGA slogan have become a symbol of protest in Denmark and Greenland, as the US President renews rhetoric about acquiring the Arctic territory. The caps, reading “Make America Go Away,” have become popular at street demonstrations, on social media and at public gatherings in Copenhagen and Nuuk.
The caps were designed by Copenhagen‑based vintage clothing store owner Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, who said early batches produced in 2024 saw little demand. Interest surged only after the Trump administration recently escalated its public statements on Greenland, triggering concern across Denmark and among Greenlanders over sovereignty and security, The Guardian reported.
“When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realise this probably wasn’t a joke,” Tonnesen told the publication “It’s not reality TV — it’s actually reality. I wanted to communicate something serious in a funny way.”
According to Tonnesen, demand jumped from a trickle to a sell‑out within a single weekend, prompting him to place orders for several thousand more caps.
He added that the popularity of the caps lies in their ability to combine satire with solidarity. “You can laugh and still send a message,” he said. “It’s lightness in something very heavy.”
Wordplay and symbolism
One of the most popular designs features the phrase “Nu det NUUK!” — a play on the Danish expression “Nu det nok,” meaning “enough is enough,” with Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, substituted in the wording. Other versions include slogans such as “Make America Smart Again” and “Already Great,” expanding their appeal beyond Danish audiences.
The designs deliberately mirror the look and colour of Trump‑style MAGA caps, using irony to challenge the political narrative without overt aggression.

Protests in Copenhagen and Nuuk
The caps were prominently worn at a weekend rally in Copenhagen, where protesters gathered despite freezing temperatures. Demonstrators waved Danish and Greenlandic flags and carried handmade placards rejecting US claims over the territory. Signs included messages such as “No Means No,” underscoring resistance to any suggestion of territorial acquisition.

“I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don’t like the president of the United States,” said Copenhagen resident Lars Hermansen, who attended the protest wearing one of the red caps.
Another protester, Kristian Boye, said the rally struck a deliberately lighthearted tone while conveying a serious message. “Humour allows people to talk,” he said, adding that Greenlanders are facing an “unacceptable” situation.
Wider political backdrop
European governments have rallied behind Denmark and Greenland, citing the strategic importance of Arctic regions and warning that Trump’s remarks undermine Western security and alliances. The renewed attention on Greenland has sharpened public sentiment in the Nordic countries, with protest culture quickly adapting to reflect broader anxieties.
As Trump continues to repeat his interest in the island, including recent remarks linking the issue to global diplomacy, the caps have evolved into more than a fashion statement.
