Madeleine McCann’s name has surfaced in a fresh batch of court records connected to Jeffrey Epstein, nearly nineteen years after she disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal. The reference comes from an FBI document that mentions a reported sighting in 2009, not from any finding that ties her disappearance to Epstein’s activities.
Madeleine was three years old when she vanished in May 2007 while on vacation with her parents. The case quickly became one of the most closely followed missing child investigations in Europe, drawing sustained attention from British, Portuguese and later German authorities. Over the years, police have examined thousands of tips, interviewed numerous witnesses and followed multiple lines of inquiry. The investigation remains open.
The newly highlighted document relates to a tip received in 2009. According to the filing, an individual claimed to have seen a young girl who resembled Madeleine with an adult woman around September or October of that year. The statement reportedly added that the woman looked “just like Ghislaine Maxwell.” There is no indication in the document that the claim was verified, nor does it state that investigators confirmed any connection.
Law enforcement agencies routinely log and assess reported sightings in high profile cases. In Madeleine’s case, hundreds of alleged sightings were reported across Europe and beyond in the years following her disappearance. Many were checked and later discounted. The inclusion of such a claim in a broader investigative file does not mean it was substantiated.
Jeffrey Epstein was arrested in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges and died later that year in a New York jail. Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted in 2021 for her role in recruiting and grooming underage girls and is serving a prison sentence. Court records related to Epstein have been released in stages, often containing witness statements, tip offs and references that were part of wider investigative work.
Officials in the United Kingdom, Portugal and Germany have not announced any new development linking Madeleine’s disappearance to Epstein or Maxwell.
Investigators in Germany continue to pursue their own primary line of inquiry in the McCann case.
For now, the reference appears to be one of many historical tips recorded over the years, rather than evidence of a proven connection.
