A stark post on X has cut through the internet’s usual obsession with high-paying, glamorous careers, throwing light on the harsh financial realities faced by many underpaid professionals in India, particularly young lawyers struggling to find their footing.
The viral post recounts a conversation with a 30-year-old, first-generation advocate who has been practising law for nearly five years but earns only Rs 10,000 – Rs 15,000 a month. According to the user, the lawyer spoke candidly about his struggles and the pressure from worried parents, the lack of financial backing to start something on his own, and the inability to attract enough clients to improve his income. Over time, the uncertainty has taken an emotional toll, with the advocate reportedly admitting that he feels he has failed in life and has resigned himself to simply letting the years pass by.
Internet debates further
The post quickly gained traction, resonating with many while also triggering sharp disagreement. Some users argued that while the struggle is real, mindset and adaptability play a crucial role in financial growth. One commenter said earning money is undeniably difficult, but sustained self-improvement, consistency, and a shift in approach are necessary to break income barriers.
Others were far more blunt. A section of users questioned whether litigation was the right path at all, suggesting that earning just Rs 15,000 after five years indicates a need to pivot. One comment pointed out that drivers and street vendors often earn significantly more, adding that the advocate could consider joining a senior lawyer, moving to a corporate role, or switching professions altogether instead of continuing in a stagnant situation.
Another perspective focused on age and perception within the legal profession. One user who claimed to have hired multiple advocates said clients tend to trust lawyers over 40, associating age with experience and credibility. From this viewpoint, younger advocates are advised to keep learning, building expertise, and waiting for opportunities to align with experience.
Some commenters also highlighted alternative career paths within law itself. They noted that litigation is notoriously slow to pay and emotionally draining, and suggested roles such as corporate legal advisors or positions in established law firms, which often offer more stable and better-paying opportunities early on.
