Several Bollywood actors have taken to social media to voice their outrage as massive protests sweep across the country after the brutal rape and murder of a resident doctor in state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Hours after thousands of women took to the streets in Kolkata demanding capital punishment for all the culprits involved with the case, actors Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Preity Zinta, and Kangana Ranaut, among others, did not hold back their anger and heartbreak at the incident.

Preity Zinta penned down a long note and called the Kolkata rape and murder case “heartbreaking” and “disgusting”. “As a woman, I want to say I’m sorry to Nirbhaya, to Moumita and to every girl that has been wronged. I’m sorry I didn’t fight hard enough for you in the past. But not anymore! None of us are safe until all of us are safe,” she wrote, adding that it is time to prioritise women’s safety and hoped for strict punishments for the accused.

In an Instagram post, Kareena Kapoor Khan wrote: “12 years later, the same story, the same protest. But we are still waiting for change.”

Alia Bhatt also took to Instagram to express her outrage and wrote, “Another brutal rape. Another day of realisation that women are not safe, anywhere,” referring to the Nirbhaya rape and murder that shook India over a decade ago.

Actor and MP Kangana Ranaut also joined ranks with other celebrities to demand justice for the victim and her family. She called the incident “horrible” and called for a CBI investigation. “The murder of a trainee woman doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata is horrible and horrific. The semi-nude body of the woman post-graduate trainee doctor was found inside the seminar hall on Friday morning. She was brutally murdered, and her body bore multiple injury marks. The preliminary autopsy report indicated sexual abuse before her murder. I hope the case is transferred to the CBI for a complete inquiry and the assaulter is punished harshly,” she wrote on Instagram stories.
