Is '30 under 30' title for sale? Founder exposes how awards are allegedly sold, shares rate card

How much does it cost to be 30 under 30? Founder’s post starts debate

An Indian entrepreneur has sparked a fresh debate online after revealing that many “30 Under 30” recognitions, once seen as a genuine marker of entrepreneurial credibility are now openly available for a price. What was earlier considered a badge of honour is increasingly being questioned, especially as almost every publication today has its own version of the coveted list.

The controversy began after founder Shubham Mishra shared a rate card on X, suggesting that such awards may be less about merit and more about money. Taking a sarcastic swipe, Mishra captioned the post: “Missed being 30u30 entrepreneur by 30k INR.” His tongue-in-cheek remark quickly went viral, triggering disbelief, humour, and anger across social media.

How much does the rate card quote?

The shared rate card laid out the costs clearly. According to it, a “30 Under 30” nomination comes with a fee of ₹30,000, while an early-bird offer, valid until May 31, brings the price down to ₹25,000. In return, nominees are promised a bundle of deliverables, including two-page magazine coverage, a “30 Under 30” award certificate, an article on the publication’s website, social media promotion, a physical award memento, and two hard copies of the special edition featuring the list.

Many users were stunned by how transactional the process appeared. One user remarked that if awards can be bought so easily, both the credibility of publications and the legitimacy of awardees take a hit. “Even genuine winners won’t be respected anymore,” the user wrote.

Others claimed this practice is far from new. One comment suggested that several LinkedIn-famous founders routinely opt for such paid packages, adding that similar models exist for certain AI and professional certifications as well.

Some users tried to add nuance to the outrage. One pointed out that the listed amount only covers a nomination, not a guaranteed spot on the final list. According to the comment, confirmed inclusion allegedly involves a much higher payment through a bidding-style process.

The sarcasm didn’t stop there. Another user jokingly suggested crowdfunding the early-bird fee by collecting ₹5,000 each from five supporters, promising to publicly credit them once the “30 Under 30” title is secured. Yet another questioned whether simply receiving such a nomination email has now become an achievement in itself.
