13.4% dip in daily COVID-19 cases, 11.7% drop in active cases in a day

The COVID-19 trajectory in all the states and UTs in India continues on a downward curve with a rapid fall in fresh infections and active cases

India has recorded 58,077 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, down from 67,084 daily cases a day before. This marks a 13.4 percent decline in the fresh infections in a day.

The fresh number of confirmed COVID-19 infection take the tally of confirmed cases in the country to 4,25,36, 137.

With 657 deaths registered in a day, the death toll due to the infectious disease has now reached 5,07, 177 while the COVID-19 mortality rate nationally stands at 1.2 percent.

Of these, 153 were the backlog deaths from Kerala which, at 188, also reported the highest COVID-19 fatalities in day. The second highest deaths, 45, were reported from Maharashtra while Karnataka reported 39 deaths in a day.

A look at countries that are easing international travel rules

The number of active cases in the country now stands at 6,97, 802, down from 7,90,789 cases a day before. In percentage terms, it means a fall of 11.7 percent within the 24-hour period.  Kerala which has the highest number of active COVID-19 cases in the country—2,33, 747, also reported the biggest dip of 25,207 in this figure.

How does a vaccine work?

A vaccine works by mimicking a natural infection. A vaccine not only induces immune response to protect people from any future COVID-19 infection, but also helps quickly build herd immunity to put an end to the pandemic. Herd immunity occurs when a sufficient percentage of a population becomes immune to a disease, making the spread of disease from person to person unlikely. What does it take to develop a vaccine of this kind?

Vaccine development is a long, complex process. Unlike drugs that are given to people with a diseased, vaccines are given to healthy people and also vulnerable sections such as children, pregnant women and the elderly. So rigorous tests are compulsory. History says that the fastest time it took to develop a vaccine is five years, but it usually takes double or sometimes triple that time.

Continuing the trend of fall in the test positivity rate, the daily COVID-19 positivity rate has come down to 3.89 percent, from 4.44 percent on February 10 while the rolling average of the weekly positivity rate now stands at 5.76 percent.

New guidelines for international arrivals

According to the statistics shared by the Health Ministry, 1,50,407 recoveries were also reported in the last 24 hours, raising the total recoveries to 4,13,31,158, which are now 97.17 percent of the total confirmed cases.

A total of 74.78 crore COVID-19 tests have been carried out in the country so far, of which 14,91, 678 tests were conducted in the 24-hour period.
