A 37-year-old woman from Jind district in Haryana recently gave birth to a baby boy. But what took social media by storm is that the newborn was her eleventh child after having ten daughters. While the family welcomed the child with joy, the news quickly sparked debate on the internet, with many calling the situation a stark example of patriarchy.

As reported by NDTV, the woman, who has been married for 19 years, was admitted to a hospital in Uchana town on January 3. She delivered the baby boy the following day. News of the birth gained attention after a video featuring the father went viral online.

The father, Sanjay Kumar, is a 38-year-old daily wage labourer. Speaking to Youtuber Kusum Goyat, he shared details about his family and confirmed that this was his first son after ten daughters. He said that he and some of his elder daughters had hoped for a boy.

“We wanted a son, and some of our elder daughters also wished for a brother. This is my eleventh child, and I already have 10 daughters,” Kumar said in the video.

Kumar also revealed the details of all his children. His eldest daughter, Shrina, is studying in Class 12, followed by Amrita in Class 11. Sushila studies in Class 7, Kiran in Class 6, Divya in Class 5, Mannat in Class 3, Kritika in Class 2, and Amnish in Class 1. The ninth and tenth daughters are Lakshmi and Vaishali. After Vaishali, the family finally welcomed a son.

Kumar said that despite his modest income, he is trying to educate his daughters and provide for them. “With my limited income, I am doing my best to provide a good education for my daughters. Whatever has happened is God’s will, and I am happy with it,” he added.

The video soon gathered overed 3.5 million views. However, many users questioned why the family continued to have children until a son was born and raised concerns about the emotional and financial impact on the daughters.

“Bro is single-handedly fixing the sex ratio of Haryana with his parochial and patriarchal mindset,” a user wrote.

Another comment said, “This is such a frustrating situation, and honestly it is heartbreaking for the daughters who were basically treated as trial runs until a boy arrived. Using children as a gamble for a male heir is a peak obsession. The system needs to step in because this isnt parenting, it is a fixated madness,” another user commented.

Several users focused on the broader dangers of son preference. One wrote, “The obsession with having a son is dangerous, bringing 10 daughters into the world just to keep trying for one boy. Children aren’t experiments or retries. How will 11 children ever receive equal love, education, healthcare, and a secure future?”

Others pointed to the practical realities of raising a large family with limited income. “I have no problem with people who want a lot of kids, provided they are financially and emotionally able to care for all of them. But this looks like they had 10 daughters just waiting to have a son. he can't even name all 10 daughters, it's both sad and hilarious,” one user said.

“Patriarchy at its peak. Now the girls have to go through a real hell,” one user wrote.

Another person highlighted how outdated such thinking appears in modern India. The user explained, “Sad and unfortunate that even in 2026 some people still believe a family is “complete” only with a boy. This isn’t tradition, it’s mindset failure; daughters aren’t a deficit to be corrected. In fact daughters are racing ahead of the boys in almost every field. We’ve seen this before, and it’s alarming it still exists: progress in tech, but regression in thinking.”

Another stressed, “This is such a frustrating situation and honestly it is heartbreaking for the daughters who were basically treated as trial runs until a boy arrived. Using children as a gamble for a male heir is peak obsession. The system needs to step in because this isnt parenting it is a fixated madness…”

According to the 2011 Census, Haryana had one of the worst sex ratios at birth in the country, with only 834 girls for every 1,000 boys. Over the years, increased monitoring, stricter laws, and awareness campaigns have helped improve the situation. As per data cited by the government in Parliament, Haryana’s sex ratio improved to 923 women per 1,000 men in 2025, bringing it closer to the national average of 933.
