Artificial intelligence is accelerating so rapidly that it may soon reshape the global workforce in ways many are unprepared for, suggests Shane Legg, chief AGI Scientist and co‑founder of Google DeepMind. In a recent conversation with British broadcaster Hannah Fry, Legg stated that AI could effectively end work‑from‑home arrangements, wiping out large segments of remote, computer‑based jobs.
He said the key vulnerability lies in roles that are “purely cognitive and done remotely via computer.” Such jobs—spanning writing, coding, analysis, design, and a broad range of digital tasks—are precisely the ones AI systems are increasingly capable of performing. According to him, companies will soon realise that advanced AI tools can output results equal to or better than human teams, leading to rapid downsizing.
“If you can do the job remotely over the internet just using a computer, then that job is potentially at risk,” Legg said, adding that many employers will simply not need large workforces for tasks that machines can not only replicate but scale instantly.
Software engineering may see the most visible shift
During the interaction, the Google DeepMind co-founder described software engineering as a clear example of how the landscape could transform. Teams of 100 developers could easily shrink to 20, he said, with those remaining engineers relying heavily on powerful AI systems to complete the bulk of the workload. As AI advances through professional‑level proficiency in maths, coding, and complex knowledge work, Legg said he expects these reductions to become widespread.
He also warned that the public often underestimates the scale of change until it becomes unavoidable. Comparing today’s moment to early 2020—when many ignored warnings of a global disruption—Legg said people struggle to accept that “a really big change is coming” even when the signals are obvious.
Productivity gains, but tough questions ahead
Despite the looming threat to remote jobs, Legg is not pessimistic about AI’s potential. He believes it could unlock a “real golden age” of productivity, enabling machines to take over repetitive manual tasks and freeing humans to pursue more meaningful work. He, however, stressed that the greatest challenge will be distribution: how societies support displaced workers, ensure purpose, and share the massive wealth created by AI systems.
