The outage saw Microsoft's Azure cloud and Microsoft 365 services experience significant issues. The disruption affected various sectors, including airlines, banks, telecom companies, and media broadcasters. Many Windows workstations displayed the notorious "blue screen of death" error screens.
In response to the outage, Microsoft announced efforts to "reroute the impacted traffic to an alternate system to alleviate impact." While some services remained down, Microsoft reported a "positive trend in service availability" in their latest statement.
The cloud service disruption caused major airlines in India, such as Spicejet, IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, and Akasa Air, to face technical difficulties affecting booking, check-in, and flight updates. As a temporary measure, the airlines issued handwritten boarding passes.
In the United States, the outage led Frontier Airlines to cancel 147 flights, with over 200 more being delayed. Sun Country and Allegiant also reported delays affecting 45 percent and 27 percent of their total flights, respectively.
