Microsoft cloud outage leads to several US flights cancelled, delayed; Teams, Microsoft 365 also impacted

Microsoft’s cloud services were impacted due to an outage which affected airlines operations in the US. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, several flights in the US were cancelled and grounded. A few low-cost carriers, including Frontier Airlines, Allegiant reported that their operations had been impacted. "The Allegiant website is currently unavailable due to the Microsoft Azure issue,” Nevada-based Allegiant said in a statement to CNN.

According to a report by Reuters, Frontier cancelled 147 flights on Thursday and delayed 212 others where 45% of Allegiant aircrafts were delayed and Sun Country delayed 23% flights. The Reuters report cited data from FlightAware tracker.

Microsoft has confirmed the outage but said that it has now resolved the issue. According to the report, Microsoft said the outage started around 6 pm ET as there were reported issues with Azure services, Most of these affected services were in the Central US region.

Other Microsoft services also affected

Microsoft also said that some of its other services were also facing issues across the world. On its support website, Microsoft said that “impacted services may include but are not limited to” Microsoft Teams, Viva Engage, Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft 365 admin centre among others.

Microsoft Teams users may be unable to leverage Microsoft Teams functions including presence, group chats, and user registration, said the company. Furthermore, admins may be intermittently unable to access the Microsoft 365 admin centre and any action may be delayed if accessible.

“We remain committed in treating this event with the highest priority and urgency while we continue to address the lingering impact for the remaining Microsoft 365 apps that are in a degraded state,” said Microsoft. The company also said that users may notice that some of the affected users are seeing relief as it continues to mitigate the impact.
