Delhi doctor says she'll 'boycott' Uber after getting hurt in cab accident: 'Unsafe to travel with them'

A doctor from Delhi has claimed that she met with an accident on Saturday during an Uber ride as the driver was driving rashly. Dentist, Dr Ruchika, said that she was travelling from her home to the nearby metro station when the accident took place. The injured doctor is currently on heavy medications and bed rest. The incident has prompted her to "boycott" Uber because she feels it is "unsafe" to use their services, Dr Ruchika said.

"I am boycotting Uber. It has become unsafe to travel with them now as drivers without driving licenses or experience are on the roads, without taking any safety measures and care for the passengers. I met with an ACCIDENT yesterday," she wrote on X. "I was travelling from my home to nearby metro. The driver from Uber missed the desired cut and tried to take U-turn without any indicator. He didn't even try to see the back in the mirror to check if there was any vehicle coming."

Adding that she was "deeply hurt", the dentist said, "I am on full bed rest for five days, with heavy medications. Tetanus injection. Torn muscle."

Dr Ruchika also said that in the aftermath of the accident, she has been bearing all the losses: financial, physical, and emotionally. "All the major bills that I've to pay. All the trauma I've to go through. All the loss, from not being able to go to the office to missing my classes for my higher studies. How will I overcome that?" she asked.

Responding to the post, Uber wrote to her: "This sounds rather frightening and we hope you and the driver are safe, Ruchika. Please share the registered contact details from which this trip was booked via DM. Our safety team will be in touch with you shortly."

In a subsequent post, the company added, "Hi, we've escalated this issue to our concerned team. We will get back to you with an update at the earliest. Appreciate your time and patience."

On Monday, a company spokesperson told Moneycontrol: "We wish to reiterate that every driver on Uber has to have a valid driving license to operate on our platform. We've reached out to the rider and will take appropriate action as per her feedback on the trip. Every Uber trip is covered by a third-party accident insurance at no extra cost. We'll be in touch with the rider to close the insurance process and wish her a speedy recovery."
