A Delhi man has flagged another instance of the ‘fake screenshot’ scam that has managed to fool many cab customers already. The man took to Reddit to relate what happened to him when he booked an Uber from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport to his home in the national capital.

The Reddit user said that on March 24, he and his father landed in Delhi at around 10:30 pm. He booked a cab via the Uber app, which showed him a fare of Rs 340. When they reached their destination however, the Uber driver demanded Rs 648 as payment.

“That’s almost double the cost of which I booked for. I asked for the screen which showed the payment to confirm,” the man wrote on Reddit. The driver obliged and showed the man a screenshot where the fare was indeed Rs 648. The Uber driver also claimed that the fare increased because of waiting charges.

Still suspicious but not wanting to get into an argument late at night, the man quietly paid up. Before leaving, however, he took a picture of the Uber driver’s phone screen with the payment information. When he later analysed the picture, he found some glaring discrepancies – his name, for example, had been misspelled. Moreover, there were two floating icons for the Uber app in the picture.

All of this led the Delhi man to conclude that he had been duped. He contacted Uber customer care. “They said the driver reported that he collected Rs 127.48 only,” he claimed in his Reddit post, adding that he has received a refund of Rs 127.48 only.

He asked his readers to be cautious while using cab aggregators and pay only the amount shown on their app. “The driver supposedly used a spoof app to show wrong payment information. I guess he was not in his senses and typed the wrong name. He even talked so much while travelling to distract us into thinking he’s a good person,” the Uber customer wrote.

In the comments section, people concluded that he had fallen victim to the fake screenshot scam where drivers use spoof apps to charge extra.

“Exactly the same happened with me. The thing was I chose online payment and the driver showed me the spoof screen. I caught him and he just fled,” wrote one person in the comments section.

“Another user reported the same scam 8 months ago,” another Reddit user pointed out, sharing the link to a post where an Uber customer complained of being scammed with a fake payment screenshot
