A Chinese woman has turned a quirky romantic gesture into a windfall by claiming a 10,000-yuan (about Rs 1.2 lakh) payout from a “love insurance” policy she purchased for 199 yuan (about Rs 2,500) nearly ten years ago.
Wu, born after 1995, met her husband Wang in high school and began dating in 2015 after enrolling at the same university. In 2016, she bought the discounted policy—issued by China Life Property and Casualty Insurance Company Limited—as a gift for her boyfriend, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported. The standard price was 299 yuan (about Rs 3,900).
The policy was structured as a high-stakes bet on commitment: if the holder married their designated partner within ten years after the third anniversary of the policy’s start date, they could claim either 10,000 roses or a 0.5-carat heart-shaped diamond ring. Later, the company allowed winners to opt for 10,000 yuan in cash.
Initially sceptical, Wang told the publication: “She said she bought love insurance; my first reaction was that she had been scammed.” But in October 2025, the couple registered their marriage after a decade-long relationship, making Wu eligible for the payout.
Wu chose cash over roses, saying: “The wedding is already over. I would not know how to preserve 10,000 roses.” Wang confirmed he had submitted the claim and was awaiting confirmation: “The customer service department said they would send us an email within one to two business days.”
The “love insurance” product was discontinued in 2017, but existing policies remain valid. Wu’s story has sparked debate online about loyalty, luck, and how, sometimes, romance really does pay.
