OpenAI’s latest model, GPT-5.2, has been widely promoted for professional use; however, it has come under scrutiny over its credibility. Tests conducted by The Guardian revealed that the chatbot used Grokipedia, an xAI-powered encyclopedia, as a source for sensitive topics such as Iran and the Holocaust. The use of Elon Musk’s platform for such questions has sparked concerns about misinformation and accuracy.
During tests, it was found that GPT-5.2 referenced Grokipedia nine times while answering twelve questions.
Grokipedia, launched in October, 2025, is an AI-powered online encyclopedia designed to compete with Wikipedia. The platform faced criticism for pushing right-wing narratives on subjects such as gay marriage and the US Capitol riot on January 6. Unlike Wikipedia, Grokipedia does not allow direct human editing and relies heavily on AI for content creation and updates.
GPT-5.2 is not the only large language model that uses Grokipedia as a source; Anthropic’s Claude has also been observed using Musk’s AI-generated encyclopedia for queries about petroleum production and Scottish ales.
According to an OpenAI spokesperson, the model’s web search “aims to draw from a broad range of publicly available sources and viewpoints”.
“We apply safety filters to reduce the risk of surfacing links associated with high-severity harms, and ChatGPT clearly shows which sources informed a response through citations,” the spokesperson said, adding that OpenAI runs ongoing programs to filter out low-credibility information and influence campaigns.
A spokesperson for xAI, the owner of Grokipeda, told The Guardian in response to questions: “Legacy media lies.”
