Can’t stop doomscrolling? Redditor shares simple solution to cut screen time and improve mental well-being

A viral Reddit post has sparked discussion on screen habits as one user explains how deleting social media and watching movies instead improved focus and mental well-being. The post has drawn wide reactions from users who say long-form content feels calmer and helps break the cycle of endless scrolling online.

Do you catch yourself opening Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts for a few minutes, only to realise much later that you are still scrolling? As short-form video platforms increasingly shape daily screen habits, concerns around attention, focus and mental well-being are gaining attention.

Amid this growing debate, a Reddit user’s personal experience has gone viral. The user explained how deleting scrolling apps such as Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok, and choosing to watch a movie instead, led to noticeable changes in focus, mood and daily routine.

In the post, the user described how scrolling through short videos affected their ability to focus. They wrote, “Not only do I no longer feel the urge to consume content every spare second – watching or continuing on a movie demands a little more time and focus than that. But my mental well-being has also changed dramatically. Scrolling videos made my brain feel like porridge. I'd suddenly realise after 5 seconds that I was watching an obnoxious ad. No focus at all. Totally spaced out.”

The user said that watching a full-length film helped them stay engaged with a single storyline, which had a positive effect on their mood and mental state. They added, “Watching a movie actually makes me feel good. Being engaged in a storyline, maybe watching a feel-good movie like I did yesterday (The Intern) … It makes me happy and relaxed. It makes me enjoy life more afterwards.”

According to the Redditor, this change also supported productivity. They said that while activities such as reading and exercising are beneficial, they did not stop the urge to scroll. Watching a movie, however, satisfied the need for easy entertainment without making it difficult to return to work or other tasks.

The user explained, “Tomorrow marks a month of watching a movie every single day. Well, sometimes I watch half one day and the other half the next. I still think it counts.”

The post received strong responses from other social media users, many of whom said they related closely to the experience. One commenter reflected on how screen habits have changed over time, writing, “It’s crazy, isn’t it? TV was seen as the ‘idiot box’ not so long ago. And now we use it - myself very much included - to ‘rest’ from our phones. I can’t even put a name on it, what’s happening.”

Another user pointed to the addictive nature of scrolling itself rather than the content. They wrote, “I saw a citation recently that said the dopamine hits come from the scrolling itself, not the content. The implication is that you’re expecting that the next thing you see will make you happier. Just like gambling on slots — it’s the anticipation that gives you the rush, not the winning.”

Other commenters highlighted how long-form content can help improve attention. One user said, “Love to hear it. Our attention spans are getting destroyed by these apps. Movies train our brains to be more patient. It’s one reason why I enjoy going to the cinema - there’s no opportunity for distraction.”

Another shared a similar view, writing, “This is why I still love going to the movies. For those two hours, it's just me and the movie. Phone is on silent and in my pocket.”

Some users compared the mental effect of watching a film with the feeling of being satisfied rather than drained. One commenter wrote, “Honestly, this makes sense. Doomscrolling fries my brain and leaves me weirdly tired, while a movie feels like junk food that actually fills you up. One story, one vibe, then you can move on with your day without feeling scrambled. Might steal this idea lowkey.”

Another added, “I relate to this a lot. A movie asks for just enough commitment that my brain actually settles instead of staying in that twitchy, half-bored state scrolling creates. I've noticed I'm calmer afterwards, too.”
