Bengaluru woman's Rs 62 lakh lawsuit against housing society fake? Users call it 'karma farming'

The 22-year-old woman revealed she had issued legal notices to both the society and individual board members for harassment, trespass, and assault. When she presented the CCTV evidence to the builder and the society chairman, the accused members were immediately removed and each fined Rs 20,000.

A 22-year-old Bengaluru woman has sparked curiosity after allegedly filing a Rs 62 lakh civil suit against her housing society’s board members, accusing them of harassment, trespass, and intimidation. The incident, originally shared by the woman on Reddit, detailed how a routine friends’ gathering at her apartment escalated into a confrontation with the accused board members.

According to her account, the incident took place on a Saturday night when five of her friends visited her home. She emphasised that there was no party, loud music, or disturbance, and that they were “merely cooking and talking.”

Trouble began when one society member knocked and told her that “bachelors are not allowed” and demanded she call the owner of the flat. “I told him I am the owner, and that’s your no goddamn business,” she wrote.

Shortly after, four to five men entered her living room without consent, accusing her and her friends of drinking and smoking weed and ordering her to vacate the flat the next day. Her male friends pushed the men out, and during the altercation, one intruder attempting to “check” her flat was slapped while trespassing.

Unable to impose their authority, the society members called the police.

Legal notices, CCTV footage, and board members removed

Police officers arrived and asked her to prove ownership. She refused, stating they had no grounds to demand documents since she had created no nuisance. Her father had insisted she install a living-room camera for safety—footage that recorded everything.

In a follow-up post, the woman revealed she had issued legal notices to both the society and individual board members for harassment, trespass, and assault. When she presented the CCTV evidence to the builder and the society chairman, the accused members were immediately removed and each fined Rs 20,000.

Her legal team filed a Rs 62 lakh compensation claim, acknowledging that while recovering the full amount may be difficult, even 10–12 percent would be significant. She also sought a permanent injunction preventing the men from contacting her again.

Social media users skeptical

As her Reddit post went viral, several users showed support and praised her courage and willingness to pursue civil remedies.

“Go ahead with that case—no one can just barge into somebody’s house,” wrote one user. Another noted, “Finally, someone pursuing civil remedies, not just criminal charges that go nowhere.” One comment summed up the sentiment: “She’s the hero Bangalore deserves — a dark knight against society uncles who overreach their non-existent powers.”

There were, however, others who were skeptical and called the whole thing "karma farming".

"OP, aren't civil courts closed for winter vacations? How did you file a suit? Moreover, even if you have filed a suit in spite of courts being closed, how do you claim that it'll most likely be heard next week? Courts don't open until January," commented one Reddit user, while a few others commented that the incident was fake.

The story is based on an account shared on Reddit. Moneycontrol could not independently verify the claims.
