A 42-year-old man has been arrested in Bengaluru after he got drunk and beat his father to death for asking him to wear a dhoti instead of shorts, Times of India reported.

The incident happened in Bannerghata on Saturday. According to the police, the accused Vinod Kumar beat his 76-year-old father Velayudhan, kicked him more than 10 times, and smashed his head against the wall, killing him.

Speaking to the publication, Vinod's younger brother Vimal Kumar said he had also attacked their father with a knife. That's when he called the police helpline and reported the incident.

"My brother is an alcoholic and would get my father drunk almost every day. He did the same on Saturday night," Vimal told reporters. "My father suggested Vinod wear a panche instead of shorts. He assaulted my father badly and later slit his neck and killed him."

He added that Vimal would often assault him and their father over trivial issues.

On Saturday night, Vinod gave Vimal Rs 300 to buy alcohol. "I brought the liquor. Both my father and Vinod drank together before they ended up having the argument," Vimal said.

Meanwhile, the police said that prima facie, the death appeared to have been caused by the brutal assault and no knife injury was found on Velayudhan's neck.

"When our team visited the spot, Vinod was on the run. We arrested him from a nearby area Sunday and are interrogating him. Velayudhan is survived by his wife and two sons. Vinod, who is separated from his wife, is into granite marketing. He was irregular at work and borrowed money from his father to buy liquor. Vimal is also unemployed. A suo motu case of murder has been registered, and the investigation is in progress," an officer told the Times of India.
