Jeff Bezos on leaving Seattle after 29 years: 'you'll always have a piece of my heart'

Billionaire Jeff Bezos announced that he was moving to Miami, Florida, from the Seattle region, to be closer to his parents, fiancé Lauren Sanchez and the Cape Canaveral operations of Blue Origin LLC, his space exploration company.

The Amazon founder shared an emotional note on Instagram, along with a video from 1994, featuring him giving a walkthrough of Amazon’s first office which was set up inside his home garage.

“I’ve lived in Seattle longer than I’ve lived anywhere else and have so many amazing memories here. As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me. Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart,” Jeff Bezos wrote in the caption.

The old video features, which features a young Bezos, was shot by his father, he said.

“We are in the nerve centre. This is the first office of Amazon.com,” Bezos says in the video.

He is seen inside the small, cramped office with wires and papers everywhere. He shows his cluttered desk and the fax machine among other things.

“Seattle has been my home since 1994 when I started Amazon out of my garage… My parents have always been my biggest supporters,” he wrote, adding that his parents recently moved back to Miami. Bezos spent a part of his childhood in Miami, going to high school there.

Amazon started off as an online bookstore, however, it took the company almost a year to sell their first book. As of today, it is the world's largest online marketplace.
