When you’re a Google employee, you can have your ‘dal makhani’ and eat it too – and then complain about it because that’s the second day in a row the dish has been served. This is not a piece of fiction or satire, but a real incident witnessed by entrepreneur and content creator Ankur Warikoo while he was having lunch at the Google office in Gurgaon.

Google is known for the impressive range of free food, snacks and drinks it offers to employees in offices across the world. While most young professionals in other companies are used to taking their own lunch to office, or paying for food in office canteens – not so at Google, where employees get not just free food, but a different menu every day, at that. Safe to say, some begin to take it for granted – like the unnamed employee of Warikoo’s post who complained about dal makhani being served twice in two days.

Warikoo summed up the vast difference between the office experience of an average Indian employee vs a Google worker in a few simple tweets.

“I am having lunch at the Google Gurgaon office one day. Standing in line at the North Indian counter. And in front of me is a Googler,” he wrote. “The gentleman steps away from the line to check what the menu of the day is. And goes, ‘Damn! Aaj phir se daal makhani hai!’”

Warikoo helpfully provided a translation of the Googler’s comment, garnished with his own opinion. “(Translated: Damn!! I have to subject myself to the torture of eating butter-laden richly cooked lentils for 2 consecutive days of my hard-earned life!)” he wrote.

The YouTuber and author said he was amazed by the Google employee’s reaction – “Wondering what is it that this person has done in his life to be troubled by the fact that he is getting to eat daal makhani for 2 consecutive days of his life?” he asked.

Many past visitors to Google offices have come away impressed by the perks that Google employees enjoy. In March, artist Alicia Souza took her Instagram family on a food tour of the Google office in Bengaluru, sharing mouth-watering clips of the meals served to Google employees in the Silicon Valley of India, as well as glimpses of snack drawers filled to the brim with chips, chocolates, biscuits and more.
