Meta’s popular messaging app WhatsApp is seemingly working on a new feature where it will allow WhatsApp users to check contacts who were recently online through the contacts page. This new functionality, which was spotted in beta testing first, aims to inform users by highlighting contacts who are currently active or have been online recently.
WhatsApp to introduce recent online contacts tab: Details
Meta has been continually updating the features of WhatsApp to improve user experience and security. The latest addition is expected to offer users a quicker way to connect with friends, family, or colleagues currently available for a quick conversation. This new Recent Online Contacts tab was first spotted by WABetaInfo, the platform which tracks upcoming features and changes in WhatsApp.
Many WhatsApp beta users have reportedly already started seeing this new tab, allowing them to view recent online contacts from their contact list. While this feature doesn't offer a complete list of your contacts, it is pretty useful for users who want to know the current status of any particular contact to initiate a call or message accordingly.
WABetaInfo also spotted that when you go to your contacts list to add people to a call, you will see a few recent online contacts that you haven’t communicated till now. This isn’t a comprehensive list, and it respects the user’s privacy settings regarding their online status, claims the report.
So, the introduction of the Recent online contacts tab feature aligns with WhatsApp's efforts to streamline its app and constantly update it with useful features. By prompting users to connect with contacts who have recently been active, WhatsApp makes it easier to know the availability of any contact on your device.
