Back in 2021, Google showcased a rather nifty tool called Magic Eraser for Pixel phones. As the name suggests, the tool could erase unwanted objects/people from images using artificial intelligence. Jumping on the AI bandwagon is none other than OnePlus, which has announced a similar tool called AI eraser.

The AI Eraser will roll out to OnePlus devices this month, starting with the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open, and OnePlus Nord CE 4. Users can expect to remove objects and in process enhance their photos.

OnePlus claims that it has built the tool from scratch and also indicated that it already has its own large language models. By eliminating the need for complex manual editing or the use of dedicated photo editing software, AI Eraser makes image editing accessible to all users regardless of previous photo editing experience, said OnePlus.

“AI Eraser is the result of a substantial R&D investment from OnePlus,” the company said in a press release. “The proprietary LLM behind the new feature has been trained on a vast dataset that allows it to comprehend complex scenes. Through this advanced visual understanding, AI Eraser is able to intelligently substitute unwanted objects with contextually appropriate elements that naturally elevate the photo’s appeal, empowering users with the ability to make high-quality photo edits anywhere and at any time.”

Google is not alone in offering a similar feature as Samsung also has its own version of eraser tool. In fact, Google also offers Magic Eraser on iOS and Android devices in the Photos app but only for Google One subscribers.

While OnePlus may be playing catch-up, this move signals the company’s foray in AI-related features that could become a staple in smartphones. OnePlus said that it will continue to “invest heavily in developing more revolutionary AI-based features”.
