Mumbai RTO issues new riveted registration number plates for vehicle

It seems to be an effort to fortify as well as officialise the registration plates of four-wheelers across India.

The Regional Transport Office (RTO) from Borivali has started issuing riveted registration number plates apart from a third registration plate for the windscreen.

Recently clicked photographs show a riveted registration plate on the front and back, as well as a third registration plate hologram sticker on the front windscreen.

The riveted registration plate retains its standard black-on-white look, but now features rivets to secure it to the car. It seems to be an effort to fortify as well as standardise the registration plates of four-wheelers across India.

There were murmurs earlier of a change in number plates to standardise the number plates across India.

The third registration plate is a sticker which is placed on the front windscreen and features a 3D distorted hologram. It is expected that the sticker will be used by e-scanners to read the registration number of the vehicle. The sticker could also be used to identify potentially suspicious vehicles quickly.

The registration plate sticker also comes with a warning which states, “It is unlawful to duplicate, alter, change, deface, destroy, mutilate, remove, tear down or take away this THIRD REGISTRATION PLATE STICKER.”

Doing so requires an authority of the law of all appropriate permissions of the Regional Transport Authority or the Registering Authority of the State.

The RTO has been plagued with issues of false registrations, unlawful registration plates and difficult to read fonts. This new registration plate could be an effort to standardise the font and style of registration numbers across India.
