Four-time MLA Varsha Gaikwad (48) represents Dharavi — known as the country's biggest slum cluster — in the Assembly.
Varsha Gaikwad said students in grades 1 and 2 have never been to schools due to the coronavirus pandemic for the last two years.
Parents' bodies have been demanding some relief from the state government in terms of slashing school fees in view of the COVID-19 pandemic situation.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday cancelled Class 10 exams and postponed Class 12 exams in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier, the state government had announced the promotion of students in classes 1-8 without conducting offline exams.
The exams are usually held in February and March, which have to be rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Usually every year, the exams for HSC or Class 12 begin in February, while those for SSC or Class 10 commence in March.
"I have also discussed the issue of how much curriculum can be omitted so that teachers can complete the remaining part. We will have to cut at least 25 percent of the curriculum,” Varsha Gaikwad added.
