Millions were affected, forcing large numbers to flee their homes.

India intervened in support of the people of East Pakistan in their struggle for independence, a move that soon escalated into a full-scale war between the two nations.

The Indian Air Force also recalled the events of December 16, 1971, noting in a tweet that Lt Gen A A K Niazi handed over his epaulettes and revolver to Indian forces, marking the unconditional surrender of Pakistani troops. The Air Force said the swift and decisive actions of India's armed forces during the 13-day war reshaped history and geography, ushering in a new era for the region.

The victory led to the birth of Bangladesh and reinforced India's strategic standing in South Asia. However, the triumph came at a heavy cost, with around 3,900 Indian soldiers losing their lives and many more sustaining injuries.

Vijay Diwas 2025: Commemoration and international link

Vijay Diwas is observed across the country through commemorative ceremonies and events. In New Delhi, the Prime Minister pays homage to fallen soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti near India Gate, while similar tributes are organised by the armed forces nationwide.

In 2025, the observances will also carry an international dimension. A 20-member delegation from Bangladesh is expected to attend the events in India. The group reportedly includes eight Muktijodhas-veterans of the 1971 liberation struggle-along with two serving officers from the Bangladesh Army and their family members, underscoring the shared history and enduring ties between the two nations.
