The Telangana Municipal Elections 2026 have delivered a clear advantage to the ruling Congress, which emerged as the single largest party across the State’s urban local bodies.
The principal opposition, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), secured second place, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finished third in the overall tally.
The final results were released by the Telangana State Election Commission following the completion of counting on February 13.
Statewide Ward Results
Elections were conducted on February 11 for 2,996 wards across 123 urban local bodies, including 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations. Of the 2,582 municipal wards and 414 corporation wards counted, Congress secured 1,347 seats, giving it a clear lead across the state.
BRS won 716 wards, maintaining a significant presence in several municipalities. BJP claimed 261 wards, improving its position in select urban pockets. The remaining 257 wards were won by smaller parties and independents, including the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Left parties.
Control of Municipalities
Among the 116 municipalities that went to the polls, Congress secured an outright majority in 64 municipalities, marking a decisive urban mandate. BRS won control of 13 municipalities. As many as 38 municipalities delivered hung verdicts, prompting negotiations among parties to secure the support of independents and smaller groups. The Forward Bloc won Waddeppally municipality.
Municipal Corporations: Mixed Picture
In the seven municipal corporations, Congress won three and was in a leading position in one more. BJP secured clear majorities in Karimnagar and Nizamabad municipal corporations, marking a significant breakthrough in urban centres. Other corporations witnessed closely fought contests, including Kothagudem, where the race remained tight.
The counting process commenced at 8 a.m. with postal ballots, followed by regular ballot papers. Results began emerging by 10 a.m., after which officials issued certificates to the victorious candidates. Counting was carried out in multiple rounds under security arrangements at 123 centres across the State.
Out of 52,17,413 eligible voters, 38,09,406 exercised their franchise, recording a turnout of 73.01 per cent. Polling across municipalities and corporations was conducted peacefully on February 11.
The newly elected councillors and corporators will be sworn in on February 16 at 11:30 a.m. This will be followed by special meetings to elect mayors and deputy mayors in municipal corporations, as well as chairpersons and vice-chairpersons in municipalities.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka described the results as a strong endorsement of the government and assured that the Congress administration would work with greater commitment. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy thanked voters for what he termed a “resounding victory,” saying the verdict reflected public support for governance and welfare initiatives.
Meanwhile, BRS Working President KT Rama Rao maintained that his party retained substantial influence in urban areas. BJP state president N. Ramchander Rao said the party had strengthened its foothold in key corporations and municipalities.
