Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday expressed shock over the gruesome rape and murder of a young doctor at a Kolkata hospital and questioned "attempts to save the accused".

In a post in Hindi on X, Rahul said that there is an atmosphere of insecurity among the doctors and women in the country as horrific details of the incident are being made public.

"The entire country is shocked by the gruesome incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. The way the layers of the cruel and inhuman act against her are being revealed, there is an atmosphere of insecurity among the doctors' community and women," he said.

Rahul also questioned the role of the local administration and the hospital, alleging that there was an attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim.

"This incident has forced us to think that if doctors are not safe in a place like medical college, then how can parents send their daughters outside for studies? Why are even the strict laws made after the Nirbhaya case unsuccessful in preventing such crimes?" he said.

Rahul added that every party and section of the society should hold serious discussions and take concrete steps on the increasing incidents of crime against women, be it in Hathras, Unnao, Kathua and now Kolkata.

"I stand with the victim's family in this unbearable pain. They should get justice at all costs and the culprits should be given such a punishment that it is presented as an example in the society," he said.

The brutal rape of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital's seminar hall has shocked the country.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the transfer of the probe from the Kolkata Police to the central agency.
