Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted Operation Sindoor while addressing the nation in the 129th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, asserting that “today’s India does not compromise on its security.”

Reflecting on the past year, the Prime Minister said that 2025 had offered several moments of national pride across diverse fields. “2025 gave many moments that made every Indian proud. From national security to sports, from scientific laboratories to the world’s biggest stages, India has left its mark,” he said, underlining India’s growing global presence.

Speaking at length about Operation Sindoor, PM Modi described it as a defining moment for the country. “This year, Operation Sindoor became a symbol of pride for every Indian. The world clearly saw that today’s India does not compromise on its security,” he remarked. He added that the operation evoked a powerful emotional response nationwide, noting that “during Operation Sindoor, pictures of love and devotion towards Mother India emerged from every corner of the country. People expressed their feelings in their own way.”

Operation Sindoor was launched by India in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. According to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Indian forces struck nine major terror launchpads located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, targeting facilities linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen, resulting in the killing of over 100 terrorists.

The operation was followed by retaliation from Pakistan, leading to a four-day military confrontation between May 7 and May 10. After sustaining significant damage, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations contacted his Indian counterpart, following which both sides agreed to halt firing and military action across land, air and sea on May 10.

PM Modi also drew a parallel between the spirit witnessed during Operation Sindoor and the nationwide response to the 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram. “The same spirit was also witnessed when Vande Mataram completed 150 years,” he said, recalling his appeal to citizens to participate using the hashtag #VandeMataram150. “The countrymen participated enthusiastically in the campaign,” he added.

Earlier, on November 7, the Prime Minister had inaugurated the year-long celebrations marking 150 years of Vande Mataram at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, where he also released a commemorative coin and stamp and launched a dedicated portal for the occasion.
