As India welcomed 2026 at the stroke of midnight, many taxpayers were left uncertain about whether the government had extended the deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar beyond December 31, 2025. Here is what the latest position is.
So far, there has been no official communication from the government or the Income Tax Department announcing any extension of the PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline. In the absence of a fresh notification, the December 31, 2025 cut-off continues to apply. As a result, PAN cards that were not linked with Aadhaar by this date are liable to become inoperative from January 1, 2026.
Taxpayers who are unsure about their PAN status should check it at the earliest on the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal by entering their PAN and Aadhaar details. If the PAN is marked inoperative due to non-linking, Aadhaar seeding remains the only way to reactivate it, subject to the applicable rules and payment of the prescribed fee.
Consequences of not linking PAN with Aadhaar
Failure to link Aadhaar with PAN within the stipulated timeline leads to the PAN becoming inactive, which can severely restrict its use for financial and tax-related purposes.
An inoperative PAN cannot be used to file income tax returns, open new bank or demat accounts, or claim tax refunds. It may also prevent individuals from carrying out high-value financial transactions, including large purchases and specified banking activities.
In addition, difficulties may arise while applying for debit or credit cards, making cash deposits with banks or post offices, or purchasing bank drafts and pay orders using cash. Certain daily cash transactions beyond prescribed limits may also be disallowed.
Since PAN and Aadhaar are mandatory for several government-linked services-such as applying for passports, opening bank accounts and accessing welfare schemes-failure to link the two may also restrict access to these essential services.
