Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the BJP and the NDA had put an end to “jungle raj” in Bihar and that West Bengal was now ready to bid farewell to the Trinamool Congress’s “maha jungle raj,” throwing an open challenge to the Mamata Banerjee-led party ahead of the Assembly elections this year.
Addressing a rally in Singur, the prime minister appealed to the people to take a pledge for change, saying, “paltano dorkar (change is necessary).” He said citizens from across sections of society were seeking a new direction for the state.
Highlighting what he described as the BJP government’s respect for Bengal’s legacy, PM Modi said it was his government that installed a statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in front of India Gate and honoured the Azad Hind Fauj at the Red Fort for the first time. He said an island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was named after Netaji, the Bengali language was accorded classical status, and Durga Puja received UNESCO World Heritage recognition under the BJP-led government.
“These people in Trinamool were partners in Sonia Gandhi’s government. Couldn’t they have got these done?” he asked, adding, “It is Modi who has so much love for Bengal.”
The prime minister said his government had also celebrated Bengal’s icons, including Raja Rammohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, and Swami Vivekananda, at the national level. “Because the BJP works on a model of development and heritage,” he said.
Pointing to the state’s potential, PM Modi said Bengal had major advantages such as large rivers, a long coastline, and fertile land. “Every district has something special. People here have intelligence, capability and dedication. BJP will enhance every district’s capability,” he said.
He further said that the TMC government is playing with the security of West Bengal and the country. "For 11 years, the Centre has urged fencing of the Bengal border, but TMC protects infiltrators and patronises gangs that create fake documents. The time has come to completely stop infiltration,” PM Modi said.
