The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said the central and the northwestern region is likely to experience normal to below normal temperatures during December to February period.
Today's assessment comes after the weather body had clarified that northwest India is unlikely to experience an unusually harsh winter in November, with weather conditions remaining largely normal, similar to previous years.
The clarification followed previous assessments suggesting that the region could witness an exceptionally freezing November, primary due to the expected development of La Nina conditions, which typically bring colder winters to North India.
IMD had noted had noted that La Nina conditions prevailed over the equatorial Pacific Ocean in November, while the Indian Ocean witnessed a negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). “The latest global model forecasts indicate that La Nia conditions are likely to persist from November to December 2025, while negative IOD conditions are expected to weaken in the coming months,” the department had declared in November.
October 2025 turned out to be one of the wettest months in the past five years, recording the second-highest rainfall (112.2 mm) since 2001 and the 16th highest since 1901. The month saw 236 instances of very heavy rainfall (115.6–204.5 mm) and 45 events of extremely heavy rainfall (above 204.5 mm), the highest totals in five years. Bihar, North Bengal, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh reported most of the extremely heavy rain events.
