Hundreds of students clashed with security forces on Tuesday as they marched towards the Raj Bhawan in Imphal forcing agencies to fire tear gas shells.
The protesters were demanding removal of Manipur DGP and security advisor to the state government.
An indefinite curfew was imposed in Imphal East, Imphal West and Thoubal districts on Tuesday after conflict escalated in Manipur once again. A five-day internet ban is already in place across the state.
As many as 11 people have been killed in different incidents of ethnic violence in Manipur since September 1.
The students, who have been camping at Khwairamband Women Market since Monday, tried to march towards the Raj Bhavan along the BT Road but were stopped by security forces near the Congress Bhavan.
The students also staged a protest rally and burnt the effigy of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
On Monday, the Manipur government had clamped an indefinite curfew in Imphal East and West districts and prohibitory orders under Section 163 (2) of BNSS in Thoubal in view of the student protests.
Manipur Police had posted on X on Monday: "Today (i.e. 09.09.2024), several groups of students started an unlawful assembly in front of Raj Bhavan Main gate, violating prohibitory orders issued by District Magistrate, Imphal West. Manipur Police tried to pacify the agitating students and warned them to disperse, explaining the enforcement of the order of the District Magistrate, Imphal West in the area. However, the protest turned violent and provoked the Police personnel by pelting stones and throwing plastic bottles of water in front of the Main Gate of Raj Bhavan. The Police party along with CAPF personnel with due orders from the Executive Magistrate used minimum force to disperse the unruly mob. (sic)"
