In an extraordinary display of courage and comradeship, a 23-year-old Indian Army officer, commissioned less than six months ago, died while attempting to save a fellow soldier, who had been swept away by a powerful mountain stream in north Sikkim, officials said on Friday.
Lt Shashank Tiwari's heroic action is a shining example of the Indian Army's core values -- selfless service, integrity, leadership by example and the unbreakable bond between officers and men, they said. He belonged to the Sikkim Scouts.

Bandh affects normal life in Assam's Duliajan
Normal life was affected in Duliajan town in Assam's Dibrugarh district on Friday due to a 12-hour bandh called by several organisations.
The bodies demanded action against proprietors of a petrol pump involved in a recent row with former student leader Sankar Jyoti Baruah, and against police personnel for handcuffing Baruah while producing him before a court earlier this week.
Several bandh supporters, including leaders of regional outfit Bir Lachit Sena, were detained in Dibrugarh and other eastern districts during the bandh, officials said.

Junior resident doctor at Chandigarh's PGIMER assaulted by baby's attendants; FIR registered
Chandigarh Police has registered an FIR after a junior resident doctor at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here was allegedly assaulted by the attendants of the baby of a woman presently undergoing treatment, officials on Friday said.
The incident took place on Thursday, they said.
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) said it is deeply concerned and anguished by a distressing incident that occurred on Thursday afternoon in the Neonatology Unit (NNN-ICU) at the PGIMER.

"After terrorists mercilessly killed civilians in front of their families in Pahalgam, the Prime Minister had vowed to avenge the brutal killings; that promise was delivered," said Amit Shah.
He further added that India dismantled terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan. Shah praised the efforts of the Indian Armed Forces for successfully combating attacks from Pakistan military.
"I'd like to categorically reiterate that during Operation Sindoor, we didn't target Pakistan's military infrastructure", Shah said.
Pakistan took the attacks on terror infrastructure during Operation Sindoor personally and attacked our military infrastructure. The Indian defence forces retaliated appropriately, the Union Home Minister added.

J&K News Live: Landmine explosions on Line of Control in Poonch as forest fire spreads to Krishna Ghati sector
Series of landmine blasts were reported along the Line of Control in Poonch on Friday after the forest fire in nearby areas reached Krishna Ghati sector, a PTI report said citing sources. No casualty was reported in the explosion, the agency report added. Both Indian Army and Forest Department have launched a joint operation to douse the fire.
This is not for the first time that the areas around Line of Control have reported landmine blasts due to fore fire. Last year in November, as many as six landmine explosions were reported in Poonch due to the blaze.
However, the officials had also said that this could be a diversion tactic by the terror groups to aid intrusion of terrorists from the other side.

World News Live: 4 dead and 17 trapped in landslides in southwestern China
Landslides in a rural area in China's southwestern Guizhou province have killed at least four people with 17 others still missing in the debris, state media said. Two bodies were found in Changshi township on Thursday, and two others in nearby Qingyang village, where a landslide buried 19 people from eight households, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.
Most of Guowa township, where Qingyang is located, had lost power after the landslides, a local newspaper reported.
A resident told state media that it had rained all night. A drone video of the area showed a large swathe of brown earth that cut through the green slope of the hilly terrain.
