Chief minister Hemant Soren is leading in the Barhait seat by over 20,000 votes, but his wife Kalpana Soren, is trailing in the Gandey seat

Counting of votes for the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly took place today with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led INDIA bloc emerging victorious in the state, as per the Election Commission (EC).

Chief minister Hemant Soren won the Barhait seat by over 39,000 votes. His wife and JMM leader Kalpana Soren secured the Gandey seat by over 17,000 votes. State BJP president Babulal Marandi is leading on the Dhanwar seat while former CM Champai Soren won the Seraikella constituency. He won with a margin of over 20,000 votes against JMM’s Ganesh Mahali.

A total of 1,211 candidates were in the fray in the elections. The Assembly elections recorded a voter turnout of 67.74 per cent, the highest since the formation of the state in 2000.

The assembly elections were held in two phases - November 13 and 20. Forty-three seats went to the polls in the first round and 38 in the second.
