The parliament session that commenced on September 18 holds some surprises from the government. The five-day sitting will feature discussions on Parliament's 75-year journey and the transition of House proceedings to the new building, adding an element of anticipation and importance to the session.

The old Parliament building, inaugurated by Lord Irwin on January 18, 1927, has stood as a witness to significant historical events for over 96 years. From the colonial era to the tumultuous period of the Second World II, the building observed the transition to Independence, the framing and adoption of the Constitution, and the passage of numerous crucial legislations that shaped the destiny of India. Its walls have echoed the debates and decisions that have defined the nation's path.

Here are some key features that distinguish the old and the new parliament buidings.

Increase in Seating Capacity

The new Parliament building represents a significant upgrade in capacity and modern amenities. It is designed to comfortably accommodate 888 Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, which is three times the capacity of the old Lok Sabha. Additionally, the new Rajya Sabha chamber will have seating for 384 members, providing an improved and more spacious environment for parliamentary proceedings. This expansion allows for more efficient functioning and better facilities for the parliamentarians.

No Central Hall

The new Parliament Building will not feature a central hall like the older one. Instead the Lok Sabha in the new building will be designed in such a way to accommodate joint sessions, thus eliminating the requirement for additional chairs when meetings are underway.

Modern Technology

Each seat of the Members of Parliament will now be equipped with a multimedia display in the new building. This feature is a gift to the country on the 75th anniversary of Independence.

Media Facility

The new Parliament building will be equipped with special facilities for the media. A total of 530 seats will be allotted to media personnel, and both houses will have galleries broadcast parliamentary proceedings to the general public.

Eco-friendly environment

Sustainability forms a crucial part of the new parliament building’s agenda. The building has utilised green construction materials and has also incorporated devices to save 30 percent electricity consumption.
