The BJP is likely to summon state party presidents to Delhi after January 15 for the election of its next national president, with the process expected to conclude between January 18 and January 20, according to a report by ANI.
Sources told ANI that Bihar minister Nitin Nabin is expected to be the only candidate to file nomination papers, and his appointment could be announced by January 20.
The report said organisational elections have been completed in 29 of the BJP’s 37 state units, crossing the halfway mark that enables the national-level election process to move forward.
How the nominations are expected to work
Sources told ANI that state presidents from the units where organisational polls are complete will submit one set of nomination papers supporting Nitin Nabin’s candidature. A second set will be filed by members of the BJP’s National Council.
The nomination papers backing Nabin will also carry the signatures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, sources told ANI.
Since Nabin is expected to be the only nominee, sources told ANI that the election is likely to be declared soon after scrutiny by BJP chief election officer K Laxman.
Who is Nitin Nabin, and why now
Nabin, 45, was recently appointed the BJP’s national working president, a move widely read as positioning him to succeed J P Nadda at the top of the party organisation.
The BJP’s national president is not just an organisational post, it’s the person who signs off on the party machine heading into the next Lok Sabha cycle. Sources told ANI that Nabin’s term is expected to run from January 2026 to January 2029, and could be extended with the 2029 general election on the horizon.
That timeline matters because it puts the next president in charge of candidate selection, alliance management, and campaign architecture in the run-up to 2029, the party’s next make-or-break national contest.
Sources told ANI that all BJP chief ministers and state presidents of BJP-ruled states have been instructed to be present in Delhi for the occasion.
The organisational election process is already in its final stretch, with multiple reports over recent months pointing to the BJP accelerating internal polls to clear the runway for the national president election.
