Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said the state government plans to request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lay the foundation stone of the Dharavi slum redevelopment project in Mumbai.
Talking to reporters, Fadnavis said the government is committed to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) and that all eligible residents will receive new homes measuring 350 sq ft. “We will request PM Modi to lay the foundation stone of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project,” he said.
The project, one of the largest slum redevelopment initiatives in the world, released its first eligibility list last year, showing that over 75 percent of tenement holders qualify for new homes under the scheme. According to DRP data, all bona fide residents who settled in Dharavi before January 1, 2000, are entitled to a 350 sq ft flat within Dharavi, provided they submit the necessary documents.
Residents who moved in between January 1, 2000, and January 1, 2011, may receive 300 sq ft units outside Dharavi at alternative locations. DRP CEO SVR Srinivas assured that “every resident will get a house either inside or outside Dharavi, based on their eligibility status.”
The ambitious redevelopment initiative, spanning 259 hectares, has faced opposition from the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and some sections of residents. In November 2024, the Adani Group emerged as the highest bidder for the project, offering Rs 5,069 crore, significantly outbidding DLF’s Rs 2,025 crore proposal.
