  • Lashkar-e-Taiba may target crowded areas with IED attacks

National capital Delhi has been placed on heightened alert following fresh intelligence inputs warning of a possible terror plot targeting crowded religious and heritage sites, particularly around the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk.

Security agencies have significantly fortified deployments across sensitive zones. Paramilitary forces have been stationed in large numbers near key religious and historical landmarks to ensure continuous surveillance and prevent any untoward incident.

Moreover, temple premises in the Chandni Chowk area are under special watch, with additional personnel deployed to deter potential threats.

A hawk-eyed vigil is being maintained on vehicles entering Delhi.

Security personnel are conducting thorough checks at border entry points, while parked and unattended vehicles in high-footfall areas are being carefully inspected. Bomb detection teams and sniffer dogs have also been kept on standby.

Authorities are also monitoring real-time CCTV feeds across the city to detect unusual movement or suspicious activity. Police teams are holding coordination meetings with market welfare associations, resident welfare associations, shopkeepers and vendors to enhance local vigilance.

In addition, comprehensive verification drives are underway at hotels, guesthouses, cyber cafes, shopping malls, cinema halls, SIM card dealers and chemical shops. Background checks of tenants, domestic helps, chowkidars, labourers and private security guards are being carried out to ensure no suspicious individuals are operating in or around sensitive areas, as per a report by The Times of India.

The stepped-up security follows intelligence inputs suggesting that the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) may be planning improvised explosive device (IED) attacks in major cities across India, including Delhi.

According to intelligence sources, a temple in the Chandni Chowk area could be a potential target, and areas near the Red Fort remain on the group’s radar. The outfit may be attempting to avenge a February 6 blast at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan, and could be plotting a major strike in India, according to sources cited in an ANI report.

"Blast alert in front of the Red Fort in Delhi. Terrorists may target a temple in Chandni Chowk. Lashkar-e-Taiba is plotting an IED attack. They are planning a major terrorist attack in India to avenge the February 6th mosque blast in Islamabad, Pakistan. Major temples in the country can be targeted by Lashkar-e-Taiba," intelligence sources said.

Officials further stated that prominent religious places across the country could be potential targets.

Notably, the alert comes months after a deadly car explosion near the historic Red Fort on November 10, 2025, which killed 12 people. The blast occurred near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station when a car loaded with explosives detonated, triggering fires in several nearby vehicles.

On February 13, this year, a Special NIA court at Patiala House extended the investigation period in the November 2025 Delhi blast case by 45 days. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had sought a 90-day extension to complete the probe. The court also extended the judicial custody of seven accused in the case till March 13.
