Byculla assembly constituency is one of the 10 seats that falls under Mumbai city district (South Mumbai region) in Maharashtra. The constituency is unreserved and has a significant number of minority voters, according election data.
The seat is also part a part of the Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency along with five other Assembly segments in Mumbai City- Worli, Shivadi, Colaba, Malabar Hill and Mumbadevi.
In the last assembly elections in 2019, Yamini Jadhav of the undivided Shiv Sena had won the seat, defeating AIMIM's Waris Pathan with a margin of 20,023 votes.
The constituency will have a total of 48 seats to ensure a smooth polling process for the voters, according to the election commission of India.
Demography
According to the latest data available, the current population of the constituency stands at over 132,000, out of which over 63,000 are women. The area also has a population density of over 35,000 per square km and the nearest suburban railway station is Byculla.
The seat is close to the famous Mahalaxmi racecourse on the west and Mazgaon and Dockyard Road on the east. Byculla also falls under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, India’s richest civic body.
The constituency was established in 1962 and suspended between 1977 and 2008, before getting reestablished during the 2009 state elections.
Key contenders
Jadhav, who has defeated Pathan in the 2019 elections, has shifted her allegiance to the Shinde faction. She will be in a close battle with Uddhav Thackeray faction’s Manoj Pandurang Jamsutkar in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections.
Other candidates in the fray are Bahujan Samaj Party’s Waris Ali Shaikh, AIMIM’s Faiyaz Ahmed, Samajwadi Party’s Sayeed Ahmed Khan and independent Abbas F. Chhatriwala, according to the election commission.
MVA, which is the opposition bloc and consists of Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (Sharad Pawar), is locked in a close contest with the ruling Mahayuti front (BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and Ajit Pawar’s NCP) in the elections to the 288-member assembly on November 20.
Votes will be counted three days later on November 23.
