The National Capital Region (NCR) is set for a major transportation upgrade with the launch of a new Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), connecting Gurugram and Greater Noida.

The RRTS route will connect Rajiv Chowk in Gurugram to Noida Sector-142 and Surajpur in Greater Noida, with a key stop at Bata Chowk in Faridabad, stretching 60 kilometers. With eight intermediate stations, the project is expected to cost around Rs 15,000 crore and aims to ease traffic congestion and reduce air pollution in the region.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini recently met with Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal in Delhi, to discuss metro expansions and the RRTS corridor’s construction. They also explored extending RRTS connectivity from Sarai Kale Khan to Karnal, as well as expanding the Gurugram metro line to reach AIIMS in Badsa.

There are additional plans to connect Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) with important NCR locations, including Gurugram, Faridabad, and Jewar Airport, through the RRTS network.

The proposal includes two new lines originating from Palam Vihar in Gurugram to enhance regional connectivity. Another extension is being considered to link Sarai Kale Khan with Rajasthan’s Dharuhera, Bawal, and Shahjahanpur.

Reports says that the Haryana government also plans to fund the metro extension from Gurugram Sector-56 to Panchgaon. Following the completion of the Detailed Project Report, the project is expected to receive central approval.

Meanwhile, the RRTS between Delhi and Meerut, which is currently partially open, may begin operations from the Capital as early as January 2025.
