India on Thursday took part as an “observer” country in the inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace on Gaza, wherein, it was represented by Chargé d'affaires at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC Namgya Khampa.
India has opted not to join the Board of Peace launched by Donald Trump for rebuilding the Gaza Strip. It was also among the countries missing from the January 22 ceremony in Davos, where the board was unveiled with the stated goal of promoting long-term peace in Gaza and possibly resolving other international disputes.
Who Is Namgya Khampa?
-Namgya C Khampa is an India Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 2000 batch, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
-Khampa is presently serving as the Chargé d’Affaires and deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., as of February 2026. In the absence of an ambassador, she leads the mission and manages major diplomatic engagements between India and the United States.
-Before taking up her current role in Washington, she served as India’s High Commissioner to Kenya, where she worked to deepen bilateral relations and expand India’s diplomatic and development partnerships in the region.
-In 2023, during her tenure in Kenya, she was also concurrently accredited as India’s Ambassador to Somalia, with residence in Nairobi.
-Khampa served as deputy chief of mission in Kathmandu, Nepal, prior to taking over as High Commissioner of India to Kenya. She has served twice in India’s diplomatic mission in China from 2002 to 2006 and from 2013 to 2016.
-She served at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York from 2009 to 2013. During that period, she was elected as a member of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) for the 2011-2013 term.
-She also represented India on the Executive Board of the UNDP and UNFPA.
-At the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, she has handled desks relating to the United States, Sri Lanka and Myanmar at different stages of her career.
-Khampa has, between 2016-2018, served on deputation to the Prime Minister’s Office. She headed the Development Partnership Division in the foreign ministry and handled Indian grant assistance and development cooperation with neighbouring countries from 2018-2020, according to a report by CNN-News18. She has a Masters’ and M Phil degrees in international relations.
